Fronting carrier

A licensed insurer that issues a policy and reinsures the risk to a captive.

A commercially licensed insurer that issues a policy in a territory and cedes most or all of the risk to a captive by reinsurance. The insured receives paper from an admitted, usually rated, carrier while the economic risk sits with the captive. The carrier charges a fronting fee and normally requires collateral against the reinsured exposure.
