Choosing an actuarial firm

Work you may need

Actuarial work on a captive or self-insured program usually comes as one of three engagements. Feasibility and pricing projects the losses on the layer you plan to keep and the funding it would need. Reserve estimates value claims already incurred, including those not yet reported. A statement of actuarial opinion gives the regulator a signed view on whether reserves are reasonable; Vermont, for example, requires one each year from a commissioner-approved actuary. Some firms do all three; others concentrate on one.

What to have ready

The analysis is only as good as the data. Expect requests for several years of loss runs — paid, incurred and open claims by accident year, gross of any deductible — with exposure measures such as payroll, revenue, vehicles or headcount, current limits and retentions, and today's premium. Gaps limit what any actuary can conclude, so ask early which items matter most for your lines. The captive feasibility study guide explains where this work sits in the wider decision.

Judging the firm

The person who will sign the work should be named, with credentials you can check — for example Fellow or Associate of the Casualty Actuarial Society and membership of the American Academy of Actuaries — and, where the domicile approves actuaries, confirmation that the approval is current. If the firm or an affiliate also manages, brokers or fronts the program, find out how it keeps the actuarial view independent. The report should set out data, assumptions and limitations, as US actuarial standards expect, and the scope should say how the firm will work with your captive manager and counsel.
