Choosing an alternative-risk consultant

What the mandate covers

A consultant's job is to help you decide what to do before you hire the firms that will do it: comparing higher retention, captive and transfer options, running or coordinating a feasibility study, shortlisting domiciles and service providers, and steering implementation. Mandates range from a fixed-scope study to ongoing program oversight. For the structures themselves, see alternative risk transfer.

Where the role stops

Consulting does not replace regulated or credentialed work. A legal opinion still comes from counsel admitted in the relevant jurisdiction, an actuarial opinion from a qualified actuary, and day-to-day operation from a captive manager. Some consultancies are affiliated with brokers, managers or insurers. That can be useful, but it changes how independent a recommendation is, and you should know it at the outset.

Before you engage

How is the consultant paid — fee, retainer, commission or a share of placed premium? Could the firm or an affiliate end up managing, brokering or fronting what it recommends? What will you own at the end, and can another firm rely on it? Who does the analysis, and which outside specialists will be brought in, at whose cost? An example scope from a comparable engagement makes the answers concrete.
